So many people will look at the task of deck cleaning and dread having to perform this year after year. One of the keys for success is using a high quality cleaning product made for decks. The right cleaner will allow you to use low pressure to remove mold, dirt and graying wood. The secret to making any deck finish last is performing this cleaning process properly. The use of high pressure alone will not clean the deck and is more apt to cause damage. Using just a pressure washer could leave mold spores you cannot see. These spores will colonize and ruin your finish.
Once you perform your deck cleaning and restore the wood to its proper pH balance, apply an oil based, semi transparent stain and sealer. Now your deck is ready to enjoy for the season. If you stay on a deck maintenance schedule, you should only have to perform a quick clean and apply a fresh coat every season.
